“ Illustrating adds nothing to the understanding of a text. So I didn’t illustrate Swann in Love ; I allowed myself to decorate the margins. To embellish. However, my pencil committed some infractions, a few allusions in a sanguine color: the rib of a violin, the curve of a dress, a back, a head of hair, Charlus’s theatrical cane. It was then that I saw myself, on the stage right side, adding a pendulum-like back-and-forth—Time, isn’t it? A kind of primitive cartoon that passes from one end of the work to the other. ”
